Moors End Cottages, Frieth, 1992 - From Joan Barksfield's collection

These four cottages, to the east of Corner Cottage, were built to hold the families of workers on Chisbridge Farm.

They were built after 1845 of mid-Victorian construction and well built, of their type.

The Tithe Map schedule shows two cottages with gardens on this site belonging to George Robinson who owned Chisbridge Farm. [ You can find the Tithe Map under "Hambleden" on the menu bar above ]

These old cottages appear to have been at the garden end of the present site.  The four new cottages of brick and flint were built bordering the road to Marlow.

"...we all know it as Moor End, rather than Moor’s End"

[ I note that the postal address is Moor End.  All I can add is that, during my childhood on Frieth Hill in the 60's/70's we all knew it as Moor's End - let battle commence !   But see also West's Cottages ]

"I have lived in "October Cottage" ( 3 Moor End Cottages) since 1981, and have seen many changes over the past 27 years. Ruth Levy was living in the "Bramblings" (which has since trebled in size) and would sell fresh  eggs to me from her garden at the back. Fred Twichen was living in the "Corner Cottage", and Charlie Brazier was in No.1. (also greatly extended).  There used to be a hedge running along the road in front of the 4 cottages, but that has now gone.  There is a well under the drive between No.s 2 & 3, where the rain water collected from the downpipes and gutters, and all four cottages pumped the water up into their kitchens.  I believe the original owners at Chisbridge Farm were called Singer, as that is the name on my deeds of covenant."
