Birch Cottage [ now Birchs ] is the next property up the hill
from Barlows and still belonged to the extended Barlow family until 1939.
In the second half of the 20th Century a large extension
was added to the lower end of this cottage for use as an artist's studio.
I do not know when Birch Cottage was first built but it
would seem to be of 18th Century construction.
[ Roger Druce notes that this property was formerly called
The Old Cottage and occupied by Basil Barlow, gardener at
Hillside View, before being bought by the Druce
family in 1948 from the estate of the late Ernest Fielder ]
