Elder Barn is in Spurgrove Lane halfway between Spurgrove and
Perrin Springs. The earliest written evidence found, so far, of this property
appears to be the
Tithe Map schedule.
In 1845 Elizabeth Lewis (nee Denham) owned this house along
with thirteen other cottages, fields etc in Frieth (Amongst these was Barlows
Platt the small meadow in which my house The Platt is built)
In the late 1860s the firm of West & Collier bought Elder
Barn and its land i.e. an orchard and Long Field behind it. From then on the
cottage was tenanted until it was sold again after WW2 and became owner
occupied.
When Mr Henry Hine owned Elder Barn he employed an architect
who, having examined the roof, suggested that part probably went back to the
16th C
